Oki PFS Family,

During this time of year, it is a tradition to start the new year of ceremonies by opening the Thunder Medicine Pipe and Beaver Bundles among Blackfoot people. Sacred bundles contain items given to the Blackfoot people and are told in creation stories. Bundles are used in traditional ceremonies to renew the relationship with Creator.

For example, a battle with the Crow and Thunder at Crowsnest Mountain resulted in the year being divided into two parts, summer (which is thunder’s time) and winter (which is crow’s time), noted by the melt and freeze and Thunder moving to Chief Mountain. At the first sound of thunder, Ksiistsikomm (Thunder), the Thunder Medicine Pipe Bundles are opened with many prayers and asking for good luck for the upcoming year.

In this new moon cycle, the Frog Moon, Matsiyikkapisaiki’somm is when we hear the songs of the frogs joining us from hibernation, this sound indicates that the ice has finished melting. The melt comes with rising waters and the ksiskstaki (beaver) makes his first dive back into the water, which is a sign to open the Beaver bundles, and call on the animals to help us be successful and happy.

Thank you to our Elders and Knowledge Keepers for helping us learn many stories and traditions of special things that are happening at this time of year.
