Final Week of School: A Message to Our Families
As we reach the final days of the school year, we take time to reflect on the learning, growth, and shared experiences that have shaped our students over the past months. The classrooms are filled with laughter, pride, and a sense of accomplishment—as well as the eager energy that summer brings.
At this special time, we also look to the wisdom of the Blackfoot people, whose teachings continue to guide us in how we relate to the land, to each other, and to our learning. One powerful value is Aitsi’poyi, meaning “it is being respectful.” In Blackfoot culture, respect is not just about politeness; it is about honouring our relationships—with our families, our teachers, our communities, and the natural world.
A traditional Blackfoot teaching that connects with this value is the story of Napi and the Rock. In the story, Napi (the Old Man or Trickster figure) borrows a rock’s blanket on a cold day, promising to return it. But when the sun shines and he no longer needs it, he breaks his promise. The rock, feeling disrespected, begins to chase Napi, teaching him—and us—a lesson about keeping our word, honouring our responsibilities, and respecting the gifts we are given.
As we say farewell for the summer, let us carry the spirit of Aitsi’poyi with us. Let us honour the friendships we’ve made, the knowledge we’ve gained, and the promise we hold for the year ahead. Thank you for being partners in your child’s journey. We wish you a safe, joyful, and respectful summer.
Hand to Heart,
Crystal Good Rider and Shauna Penner
