Why Attendance Matters

If children don’t show up for school regularly, they miss out on fundamental reading and math skills and the chance to build a habit of good attendance that will carry them into college and careers. Preliminary data from attendance studies found that children who were chronically absent in kindergarten and 1st grade were far less likely to read proficiently at the end of 3rd grade. The more school children miss, the bigger the gaps in their learning become, and the harder it is for them to catch up to their peers who attend regularly. If you need assistance with attendance improvement, please contact us!

Spring Offering Ceremony with Elder Aapaamahka

On Thursday, April 10, PFS welcomed Elder Aapaamahka and others into the school for a Spring Kitstaan Offering Ceremony. The ceremony included several knowledge keepers, members of the CBE Indigenous Education team, PFS staff members and student helpers. It was a wonderful opportunity during which Elder Aapaamahka, Leonard Bastien, blessed the school and offered prayers to the Creator for health, safety, and the longevity of our students, staff, and community members. Students also participated in their classrooms with berry soup, bannock, and a prayer.

Hoop Dancing with Elder Shirley

PFS students and staff are thrilled to welcome Elder Shirley Hill, Anatsipi’kssaakii, to share her gifts, and knowledge with us for five days. A proud member of the Siksika Nation, Shirley has been dancing Fancy Shawl style for almost 40 years. Shirley is passionate about teaching step by step traditional dance and hoop dance. She understands the importance of sharing the history of the Blackfoot people - Niitsitapiisinni (Our Way of Life) from the Dog Days, Horse Days, Buffalo Days and the present. Shirley works in many schools and loves to share stories and introduce students to her sidekick, Lemon the Bear. Shirley focuses on Blackfoot words and the importance of language in keeping traditions alive and making connections to nature.
