Oki PFS Teachers and Staff

As we come to the end of Aapistsisskitsaato’s (May) and look towards Misamsootaamsta/ Ito’tsisamssootaa (June), we can appreciate that the rainy weather provides a long and much-needed drink for Na’a. Elder Saa'kokoto teaches us to appreciate the rain as Mother Earth transitions from Spring to Summer. Misamsootaamsta/Ito’tsisamssootaa, the month of June, translates to “when the long rains come.” Here is an old video of Saa’kokoto sharing about the upcoming month of June, Ito’tsisamssootaa. I would also like you to be mindful that sending toys and candy to school with your child is not encouraged. In some circumstances the toy can be broken or stolen and it makes it difficult to remedy. Candy and pop also make it hard to manage a child who has sugar in the body. So please speak with your child about saving those until they are at home.

Pride Month

The Calgary Board of Education strives to ensure that all our schools are safe and caring places for all students and staff. As a public-school system, we welcome and celebrate students from diverse backgrounds, perspectives and beliefs.

At Piitoayis Family School, we have honoured and recognized our unique school community throughout the school year with events such as Orange Shirt Day, the Berry and Tobacco Ceremony, Black History Month, Métis Week and the Face Painting Ceremony.

June is Pride Month Internationally, a time to recognize the pursuit of equality and rights for 2SLGBTQ+ individuals. The CBE reaffirms its commitment to creating safe and caring learning and work environments for 2SLGBTQ+ students and staff. At Piitoayis Family School, we will recognize this occasion by working together with students, families, employees, and our communities to build positive learning environments for student success.

We acknowledge that each family and community have unique experiences with different recognitions and celebrations, and any commemorative activities in our schools may be perceived differently. However, classroom- based activities and lessons that promote diversity and inclusion are not subject to exemptions under the Education Act.
