Blackfoot Value of the Month: Kakyosin
(Be aware of your environment; Be observant)
Oki, Dadánast’áda, Âba Wathtec, Tânisi, Taanishi, Bonjour, Hello Parents and Caregivers,
This month, we continue to focus on the Blackfoot value of Kakyosin — being aware of our environment and being observant.
In Blackfoot teachings, the land is a teacher. By carefully watching the animals, plants, weather, and changing seasons, people learn important lessons about how to live, prepare, and care for one another. Knowledge comes not only from being told, but from taking the time to notice what is happening around us.
We encourage students to practise kakyosin each day by slowing down, observing carefully, listening to others, and noticing how their choices affect the people and the world around them. When we pay attention, we are better able to learn, show respect, and care for our community.
Learning About Blackfoot Medicines
This week, students will have the opportunity to take part in meaningful land-based learning connected to important Blackfoot medicines, including sage and tobacco. These medicines hold deep cultural, spiritual, and ceremonial significance and are gathered and used with care, respect, and gratitude.
Students will participate in ceremony and harvesting alongside Elders and those who carry these teachings, learning about the importance of respecting the land, giving thanks, and understanding our responsibility to care for what the land provides. The medicines gathered will be brought back to our school community, where they can continue to support ceremony, learning, and connection throughout the year.
We are grateful for the opportunity for students to learn through these experiences and to deepen their understanding of Blackfoot culture, teachings, and relationships with the land.
Where Have All the Buffalo Gone?
On Wednesday, October 7, students in Grades 3–6 will have the opportunity to attend a 55-minute performance of Where Have All the Buffalo Gone? by Axis Theatre. The performance will begin shortly after 12:45 p.m. and will be followed by a question-and-answer period with the performers. Students will return to class at approximately 2:15 p.m.
Before the performance, teachers will review respectful audience expectations with students, including remaining seated, listening carefully, and saving comments and questions until the end of the show. Axis Theatre has also asked that no photos or videos be taken during the performance.
Families who would like to learn more about the play are welcome to review the accompanying Buffalo Study Guide.
We are looking forward to this opportunity for students to experience live theatre and engage with the themes and learning shared through the performance.
